This class. These humans. I had an absolutely unforgettable time in my James Cone class this week. Learning more about Black Theology, Black power, Womanist Theology, and the unmistakable centrality of a Black Christ in dismantling white supremacy and oppression amid knowing my participation in it. As Cone himself might say from his book ‘Looking Back, Going Forward, in Shaping a Theological mind’: “…the blackness in my theological consciousness exploded like a volcano after many dormant years…” And further, from Black Theology and Black Power: “There is no place in this war of liberation for nice white people who want to avoid taking sides and remain friends with both the racists and the Negro.” AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: “There is no time for talk when men are suffering.” @ms_nikki_b @kamonamcdowell @kerry.connelly @annegingvl @melissagreene @revlund @masonmennenga @xival.photography @hazelstylelife @kimackatarie @slsessio @hurricaneallan @star_nekia @profjte @shondanicolegladden

Today in my James Cone class @cts_indy with @profjte we talked about the importance of a Black aesthetic as art doing the work of liberation, for as he quotes Brother Knight, “To accept the white aesthetic is to accept and validate a society that will not allow him to live.” (Black Theology & Black Power, p. 132). Our class then went to Newfields Museum where curator @elli616 guided us through the work of Samuel Levi Jones. This particular piece is a means to explore the issue of erasure and exclusion — it is a “critical reprise of Gerhard Richter’s 1972 Venice Biennale illustration, which depicted all white male icons of nineteenth and twentieth-century Western culture” as found in the 1972 encyclopedia. Because Richter could have shared many important women and other culture figures, Jones responded with a piece depicting 48 portraits of 24 Black women and 24 Black men who could have appeared in the 1972 encyclopedia, but didn’t. His work is thought provoking, powerful, and incredibly important.
